In western society today religion and medicine conflict mainly when someone’s beliefs forbid medical treatment. Coleman (English, communication and performance studies,, Monash University, AU and White (social sciences, The Australian National University) present essays that challenge the assumption that medicine and religion are usually distinct. They discuss spirit/body connections in several belief systems, including, Aboriginal, Muslim, Buddhist, New Age and Christian. They emphasize that the way the body is seen as part of a spiritual unity affects healing and attitudes toward medical procedures. The impinging of morality on medicine is shown through the practice of selling organs and from historical accounts of illness as a punishment or a sign of sanctity. That this belief hasn’t died is demonstrated in articles on "self-inflicted" illness caused by obesity, smoking, alcoholism or drugs. The use of the concept of inherent inferiority is brought out through Nazi theories, not yet entirely abandoned. The book as a whole widens the topic of religion, medicine and the body in ways that might surprise those who think they are totally scientific and secular in their outlook.
